About Burano

Burano

Burano is about 40 minutes from St. Mark’s Square by vaporetto.

The island is very easy to walk around and Burano’s main attraction is its colorfully painted houses.

Legend has it that fishermen painted their houses to see them at a distance when they were fishing in the lagoon.

Burano’s main craft attraction is lacemaking and it also has the Museum of Lace Making – Museo de Murletto.

The first lace were created here in the 16th century. Noteworthy lace from across the ages can be viewed in the museum in Piazza Baldassarre Galuppi (near to the church).

Other attractions include glass blowing (lume glass working) – which it has in common with Murano and other lagoon islands.

Leaning Tower of Burano

Visible throughout Burano, the bell tower (campanile Storto) leans due to inadequate foundations in the marshy soil of the lagoon.
