About Mazzorbo

Mazzorbo Island Venice Church Tower

Mazzorbo is linked to Burano by a bridge. It was once an important trading centre but is now known for its vineyards and orchards.

Mazzorbo’s main attractions are the fourteenth century Church of Santa Caterina, the Venissa boutique hotel, vineyard and Michelin starred restaurant (link below).

The walled Venissa vineyard grows the Dorona grape – a very rare white-wine grape grown exclusively around Venice.

The first traces of viticulture in the area date back to over 2500 years ago – and even St Mark’s Square once had a vineyard in the year 1150.

In 1881, archaeologists discovered Mycenaean pottery on Mazzorbo, showing that there was  commercial activity on the island in 1600–1100 BC
