History
Dedicated to the Apostle Paul, the church gives its name to the San Polo sestiere of Venice.
The current Gothic church dates from the 15th century, but a church has stood on the site since the 9th century and the south doorway, possibly by Bartolomeo Bon, survives from this original church.
Art inside the church includes Tintoretto’s Last Supper and The Assumption of the Virgin with Saints. The presbytery is entirely decorated with works by Palma the Younger and the altar is decorated with Paolo Veronese’s The Marriage of the Virgin.
One of the attractions is the 18th-century Oratory of the Crucifixion (Fourteen Stages of the Way of the Cross), painted by Tiepolo’s son Giandomenico in 1749-50.
