Burano is about 40 minutes from St. Mark’s Square by vaporetto.
The island is very easy to walk around and Burano’s main attraction is its colorfully painted houses.
Legend has it that fishermen painted their houses to see them at a distance when they were fishing in the lagoon.
Burano’s main craft attraction is lacemaking and it also has the Museum of Lace Making – Museo de Murletto.
The first laces were created here in the 16th century. Noteworthy laces from across the ages can be viewed in the museum in Piazza Baldassarre Galuppi (near to the church).
Other attractions include glass blowing (lume glass working) – which it has in common with Murano and other lagoon islands.
Casa Bepi
One of the most colourful houses is Casa Bepi (Bepi’s House) which can be found using the map link below.
At dusk, with the sun setting and the light fading over the lagoon (and with fewer day-trippers), is one of the nicest times to appreciate Burano.
Tips
The 16th Century Church of San Martino, with its leaning belltower and a painting by Giambattista Tiepolo (Crucifixion, 1727) and the Oratorio di Santa Barbara is worth visiting.
Seafood here is often cheaper here than Venice.
Restaurant reservations often required in high season.
The Islands of Burano, Mazzorbo and Torcello are all close together. Burano and Mazzorbo are connected by a bridge, Torcello is a short vaporetto ride away.
