Natural History Museum
Venice, Italy
Two million objects covering botanical, entomological, and zoological specimens, fossils, and ethnographic collections.
History
The museum was founded in 1923 and has a number of galleries with exhibits including a dinsosaur, crocodiles, fossils and various specimens plus an aquarium.
The museum is situated in the Fondego dei Turchi Palace, which was built in 1225. In 1621, it was owned by Turkish merchants who turned it into a warehouse and a residential space. From the early 17th century (1621) through to 1838, the building served as a ghetto for Venice’s Ottoman Turkish population (thus “dei Turchi”). The fondaco (from Arab: fonduk) then served as a combination home, warehouse, and market for the Turkish traders.
A number of restrictions were placed on the fondaco and its residents, including certain times one was able to enter and leave the ghetto, as well as on trading.
Tip
