Santa Maria del Giglio, San Marco, Venice
Santa Maria del Giglio
Venice, Italy
One of the finest Venetian Baroque facades in all of Venice
History
The church of Santa Maria del Giglio which translates into English as St Mary of the Lily is, confusingly, also known as Santa Maria Zobenigo.
Rebuilt between 1678 and 1681, the exterior shows six marble relief maps of various places that were in Venetian possession during that time: Padua , the Croatian cities of Zadar and Split, and the cities of Heraklion and Corfu in Greece.
Works of Art
Particularly of note is the Molin chapel which has the only Rubens painting in Venice – Madonna and Child with Young St John. That chapel also has a painting of St Vincent Ferrer by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta and Giuseppe Angeli.
The altar has two statues depicting the Annuciation by Heinrich Meyring and in the sanctuary are paintings of the Evangelists by Jacopo Tintoretto.
Other paintings in the church include works by Sebastiano Ricci and Palma the Younger.
In Literature
The church and its parish feature in the novel Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke and is also mentioned in Ernest Hemingway’s 1950 novel, Across the River and Into the Trees along with Those Who Walk Away by Patricia Highsmith, which is set in Venice.
