Marinaressa Gardens in Castello, Venice
Marinaressa Gardens
Venice, Italy
Relaxing Gardens used for art exhibitions during the Biennale
About
Built in the 1930s, the gardens replaced a number of shipyards which had operated in the area for centuries. The gardens are situated in the Castello district, alongside the part of the San Marco basin between the Arsenale and the Biennale Gardens.
There are two gardens, Ponente and Levante. The two gardens, newly renovated are about 1.4km (nearly a mile) from Piazza San Marco.
Recent exhibitions held here include ones based on the idea of “personal structures” focusing on the theme of “Identity”. Recent artists include Mercedes & Franziska Welte, Maritta Winter, Anton Kerscher and Carole Feuerman (shown in the pictures above).
The garden’s name is taken from the 15th century building in the middle, called ‘Venice’s marinaressa’: originally it was housing for sailors who had distinguished themselves for services rendered to the Serenissima.
