Ca Rezzonico, Dorsoduro, Venice
Ca’ Rezzonico
Venice, Italy
A chance to see a real Venetian palazzo complete with furnishings and artworks
About
One of the few Venetian Palazzos that is open to the public. The palazzo contains the museum of 18th century Venice and as such gives you an insight into how the Venetian nobility lived.
The rooms, salons and halls within the building contain an incredible amount of period art and features from artists such as Tiepolo, Canaletto, Bellucci, Pellegrini, Tintoretto, Schiavone, Palma the younger and many more. There’s even a re-creation of an 18th-century Venetian pharmacy.
Construction
The palazzo was made by combining two existing buildings – work on this was completed in 1661. Work began on the facade facing the canal, however neither architect nor client was to see the completion of the Palazzo. Baldassare Longhena, the architect, died in 1682 and Filippo Bon, owner of the property, saw his finances ruined by the cost of the palazzo. Years later, the palazzo was bought by the Rezzonico family and was restored by Giorgio Massari. Ca’ Rezzonico was once Pope Clement XIII’s residence.
