About
Small supermarkets (or minimarkets) can be found throughout Venice – Coop, Despar, Conad and Crai along with some alimentari (small grocers shops).
Italian supermarkets often have a focus on fresh produce along with pasta and sauces. Tins of tomatoes and beans and associated products can also be found. Often, the frozen foods section is small with pizzas and ice-cream. Some supermarkets have ready meals, but not to the extent of the UK or USA.
Increasingly organic and some gluten free produce can be found.
As well as having all the essentials (everything from toothbrushes to deodorant) you will be able to find some foodie presents at reasonable prices (pasta, olive oil and more).
There are also numerous supermarkets in Mestre and minimarkets in Lido di Venezia.
Food Information
HYGIENE
Generally in Italian supermarkets you will see plastic/biodegradable gloves. These are for you to use when choosing bread/vegetables.
MILK
Milk in Italy comes in various types – both dairy and non dairy milk.
Fresh milk has a short shelf-life (usually about a week).
Whole milk is called as latte intero and is 3.0–4% fat.
Semi-skimmed milk is called latte parzialmente scremato 1.8% fat.
You can also find skimmed milk (skim milk) which is called latte scremato and contains approximately 0.1% fat.
These are pasteurised milks.
Long-life milk has UHT on its label and is usually kept on a shelf.
Non dairy milks are also available. Soya milk (latte di soia), almond milk (latte di mandorla), along with others. They’re often kept close to the dairy milk section, but not always!
BREAD
Supermarkets often have a selection of bread available including pre-sliced loaves, bread rolls and non-slice loaves.
These will usually include white and brown bread and a variety of each.
Bread is usually charged by kilogram but are sometimes priced. If not priced, bag and take to the scales and print out the price.
VEGETABLES
Using gloves to choose your vegetables, take note of the product number above them. Take the bagged vegetables to the scales and press the button corresponding to the product, print-out the price label and put it on the bag.
Tip
Perhaps the most beautiful supermarket?
Located in the Cannaregio district, Teatro Italia was opened in 1916, designed in a Neo-Gothic style. It operated as a cinema with some theatre use, closing in 1990.
In 2018 it was converted into a Despar supermarket, retaining its original decor in all its splendour.
This supermarket is near the Casino Vaporetto waterbus stop, about 11 minutes walk from the train station.
