Palazzo Cini, Venice, Italy
About
Palazzo Cini is home to a collection of Ferrarese and Tuscan art by Vittirio Cini (1885– 1977), arguably one of the most important art collectors of the twentieth century.
The Palazzo’s paintings from Renaissance Florence include masterpieces by Filippo Lippi, Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Piero di Cosimo and Pontormo. Plus sculptures and art objects – Renaissance enamelled copper items, Gothic ivories and a Cozzi porcelain table service laid out in the Neo-Rococo oval room.
Exhibitions and other events are held on the second floor.
Construction
The palazzo was made by combining two existing buildings – work on this was completed in 1661. Work began on the facade facing the canal, however neither architect nor client was to see the completion of the Palazzo. Baldassare Longhena, the architect, died in 1682 and Filippo Bon, owner of the property, saw his finances ruined by the cost of the palazzo. Years later, the palazzo was bought by the Rezzonico family and was restored by Giorgio Massari. Ca’ Rezzonico was once Pope Clement XIII’s residence.
