Squero di San Trovaso, Venice
Squero San Trovaso
Venice, Italy
One of the few traditional Gondola boatyards left in Venice
About
The squero of San Trovaso is the most famous Venetian gondola boatyard
The boatyard stands along the Rio San Trovaso in Dorsoduro and dates back to before the seventeenth century and is one of the very few shipyards still in operation in Venice.
The boatyard building is not typical in Venice being in the style of mountain house. The reason is twofold: both the carpenters and the construction wood came from Cadore in the mountainous Trentino-Alto Adige, plus the design was aimed at protecting workers in case of rain and for storage of tools.
Construction
Gondolas are built entirely by hand, requiring eight different typesof wood and months of work.
The gondola construction is made without plans and each is customised to suit each client.
The gondola yard still works with the methods of a century ago – without winches and modern technology.
Tours
The squero occasionally organises guided tours showing the particular characteristics of the gondola and techniques in making them.
The visit lasts about half an hour.
