The Scuola was founded in 1594 under Doge Pasquale Cicogna. The architect was Baldassarre Longhena (his best known work is the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute). Like all of the Scuole, it was a secular confraternity devoted to works of charity and worship. This scuola was the only one of the six Scuole Grandi to admit women.
