Punta della Dogana
Venice, Italy
Venice’s old customs house, now an art gallery. Great views.
About
Punta della Dogana (customs point) Built in circa 1677 to make sure that duties were paid by all vessels entering the Grand Canal. The architect was Giuiseppe Benoni who designed the tower with two Atlases lifting a golden bronze sphere on the top of which is Fortuna (a weathervane).
The building continued to be a customs house until the 1980s. After twenty years of abandonment, it was transformed into a contemporary art space by The Pinault Collection and architect Tadao Ando. In June 2009 Punta della Dogana reopened to the public and since then has been presenting temporary exhibitions.
