About
Lazzaretto Nuovo housed a Benedictine monastery during the Middle Ages.
In 1468 by decree of the Senate of the Serenissima , it became a Lazzaretto (a quarantine station named after Lazarus, the saint who was raised from the dead).
The purpose was to prevent contagion during the time of the Great Plague (the Black Death). The island housed the warehouses which were used to examine goods suspected of being infected with the plague disease.
Individuals who might, or were suspected to be at risk of contagion, were transferred to the Lazzaretto Vecchio hospital .
It was then used as a fortress under Napoleonic and Austrian rule, and was decommissioned by the Italian army in 1975.
Today
In 1997, the island was chosen as a site for the collection of the Venice lagoon’s archeological material and an eco-museum was born.
Workshops include the experience of spending a week on the island, surrounded by history and nature along with open days, special openings, conventions, meetings, performances and more.
The island is open for visits from March to November, for guided visits only.
The visit lasts about two hours. It includes the historical-archeological itinerary of the Lazzaretto Nuovo inside the walls (the museum exhibit inside the Tezon Grande and the open-air archeological digs), as well as the nature walk of the marshlands outside the walls (“The Path of the Barene“).
