About
Chioggia is described as a miniature version of Venice, with a few canals and narrow streets which are known as calli. Originally a part of the part of the Byzantine Empire in the 6th century, Chioggia (pron: key-odja) played an important role in the War of Chioggia between Genoa and Venice 1378 – 1380.
Chioggia is just over an hour and quarter (or so) from Lido. Rather than a quick visit, make a day of it.
Church of St Andrew
The church of St. Andrew has a belltower that was used as a lighthouse or a watchtower to guide fishermen. Inside is the second oldest in clock of the world. The tower can be visited on Sunday morning and afternoon only (ask for exact times as these may change*).
Church of San Domenico
The church of San Domenico sits in its small island and contains paintings by Vittore Carpaccio (Saint Paul – his last work 1520), Oration in the Vegetable Garden by Alvise dal Friso, Battle against the Albigensians by Pietro Damini and a large composition with Saints attributed to Jacopo Tintoretto. The church’s crucifix is said to date from 1300.
Museum of Adriatic Zoology
The Museum of Adriatic Zoology Giuseppe Olivi has a 6 rooms dedicated to various aspects of marine life including The Senses Room, The Shark Room and The Food Web Room. There’s also a room dedicated to local fishing traditions.
Sottomarina
Next to Chioggia is the beach resort of Sottomarina, a 20 minute walk away.
Sottomarina was founded in the 7th century however it was completely destroyed in 1379 during the war between the Genoese and the Venetians.
Today it is a popular seaside resort with cafes, restaurants and more. The fine sandy beach is about 5km (3 miles) long.

GETTING TO CHIOGGIA
1. Take a vaporetto to Lido S.M.E.
2. From Lido take the number 11 bus which goes to Pellestrina (and includes a short ferry crossing)
3. At the final stop in Pellestrina you board another ferry (25 mins or so) for the final leg into Chioggia.
4. If you’re in any doubt just ask someone!
