About
La Certosa is located near Vignole island, about 500m (1600ft) from Lido di Venezia.
The island housed a community of Augustinian friars from 1199. After two centuries, the abandoned island was ceded to the Carthusians. After the Napoleonic conquest of Venice, it became a military installation.
The 17th century Castello delle Polveri (Powder Castle) is the only historical building that remains today. It was restored in the 1990s.
The Project
In 2010, plans were revealed for a project called “Parco della Certosa”, which would redevelop the abandoned island to include a public green park along with having restaurants, bars, nature trails,a marina and more.
The project’s completion was originally scheduled for 2015. However, on 12 June 2012, a tornado struck the island, causing major damage which delayed the project.
Today
Today the project is fully underway with 300 boat moorings in Certosa’s new marina, a restaurant, parkland and more.
