Squero di San Trovaso, Venice
Squero San Trovaso
Venice, Italy
One of the few traditional Gondola boatyards left in Venice
About Squero di San Trovaso
The squero of San Trovaso is the most famous Venetian gondola boatyard
The boatyard stands along the Rio San Trovaso in Dorsoduro and dates back to before the seventeenth century and is one of the very few shipyards still in operation in Venice.
The boatyard building is not typical in Venice being in the style of mountain house. The reason is that the carpenters and the construction wood came from Cadore in the mountainous Trentino-Alto Adige region of Italy.
Gondolas are built entirely by hand, requiring eight different types of wood and months of work. Each gondola is customised to suit each client.
The gondola yard still uses traditional working methods of a century ago – without modern technology.
