About Pellestrina

Half way between the islands of Lido and Chioggia lies Pellestrina. The island is 11km (7 miles) long.

There are four main villages with colourfully-painted houses and the Ca’ Roman nature reserve at its southerly point.

The main industries of the island are market gardening, fishing, tourism and lace making.

Pellestrina Attractions

Attractions on the island included the Ca’ Roman nature reserve, known for its pine trees, birdlife, sand dunes and beach. Ca’ Roman is located on an important bird migration route. Many species of bird use the area in autumn and spring to rest and feed before continuing their migration.

Cycling is a popular activity here and a good way to view the island. Bicycles can be rented in Lido di Venezia.

Restaurant reservations are always recommended if you plan to eat on the island.

Lacemaking, Seafood and Relaxation

Pellestrina’s width is as little as 16ft (5m) at points. The island shows a much slower pace of life than venice.

To get to Pellestrina to Lido and then a bus from Lido to Pellestrina (detailed on our Vaporetto Line 11 page). The bus briefly goes on a ferry between the islands.

Lace making is made here and, unlike in Burano, is made with bobbins (see picture). Also worthy of note is Pellestrina’s August celebrations for its patron saint Santo Stefano.

As you would expect, the restaurants in Pellestrina specialise in seafood, locally caught and cooked by local chefs.

In Fiction

Donna Leon‘s crime fiction novel A Sea of Troubles takes place on Pellestrina.

The protagonist, Commissario Guido Brunetti of the Venice police, must solve the murders of two clam fishermen off the shore of Pellestrina and encounters great difficulty conducting an investigation when faced with the island’s close-knit community, bound together by a code of loyalty and a suspicion of outsiders.

Though a native of Venice, which is a short boat ride away, to the islanders he is a foreigner.

Cenzo Vianelli, the hero of The Girl from Venice (2016), a novel written by Martin Cruz Smith, who lives and works as a fisherman in Pellestrina in 1945
