La Fenice
Venice, Italy
A famous and beautiful Italian opera house where major composers, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti and Verdi premiered their works
Opera and History of La Fenice
La Fenice is one of the most famous and renowned landmarks in the history of Italian theatre and in the history of opera as a whole.
The opera house, whose name in English is The Phoenix, is just a short walk from St Mark’s Square or the Accademia Bridge.
La Fenice became the site of many famous operatic premieres at which the works of several of the four major bel canto era composers – Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi – were performed.
These days both opera and music concerts are held in La Fenice.

The Phoenix
La Fenice (The Phoenix) reflects the history of the building where three of the theatres were lost to fires. This is am opera house that has, quite literally, risen from the ashes a number of times.
The first was in 1774, the second fire came in 1836, but rebuilding was completed within a year.
However, the third fire was the result of arson. It destroyed La Fenice in 1996 leaving only the exterior walls, but it was rebuilt and re-opened in November 2004.
World Famous Premieres
Other famous premieres held in La Fenice include Stravinski’s The Rake’s Progress, Britten’s The Turn of the Screw and Prokofiev’s L’angelo di fuoco (the Fiery Angel).
