About San Michele Island, Venice
San Michele is not a tourist attraction as such, but certainly a peaceful place with cypress trees and flowers and with graves of famous people to visit.
Those buried here including Igor Stravinsky (Russian-born composer), Joseph Brodsky ( Russian-American poet and essayist), Jean Schlumberger (Designer for Tiffany & Co.), Christian Doppler (Austrian mathematician and physicist famous for the Doppler effect), Frederick Rolfe (English writer, artist, photographer and eccentric), Horatio Brown (Scottish historian who specialized in the history of Venice and Italy), Ezra Pound (American poet and critic), Luigi Nono (Italian avant-garde composer of classical music), Franco Basaglia (Italian psychiatrist, pioneer of the modern concept of mental health) and Helenio Herrera (Argentine, naturalized French, football player and manager) amongst many others.
San Michele also contains 7 war graves from World War I of officers and seamen of the British Merchant and Royal Navy.

Location: San Michele. Actv waterbus line 4.1 (anticlockwise) and line 4.2 (clockwise) that connect Murano, Ferrovia, Giudecca and S.Zaccaria.

Opening Times
The opening hours of the cemetery vary according to the season
April 1 to September 30: 7:30 am – 6:00 pm
October 1 to March 31: 7:30 am – 4:00 pm
Christmas, Easter and New Year’s Eve: Closes at 12:00
All Souls’ Day (November 1 – November 4): 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Access is allowed up to 30 minutes before closing time.
Rules when visiting San Michele
The cemetery is still in use today. Please act respectfully at all times. The dress code is similar to that of churches in Italy, with the requirement for legs and shoulders to be covered. There is a toilet and vending machine on the island but generally be prepared for no water or food to be available. Photography isn’t allowed.
